REGIONS OF UKRAINE/COSTUMING

Each region of Ukraine has it's own distinct culture and flavour. While all of these regions are a part of Ukraine, and therefore share many similarities, each region has it's own distinct differences which developed due to neighbouring cultural influences and the geographical terrain of the area.

The Zorya Ukrainian Dance Association endeavours to depict these regional differences as accurately as possible through costuming, music and choreography. The group's dance costumes tend to depict those worn by young people to special occasions during the 19th century. Some necessary adjustments have been made due to the lack of availability of certain items and to make it easier for the dancers to wear them in performance.

Women's costumes are made of the same basic elements in nearly all of the regions, including hairstyle and head covering, neck adornment, shirt, skirt, apron, sash, vest, outerwear and footwear. Men's costume basics include head covering, shirt, pants, sash, outerwear and footwear. The differences between regions come through in the colours, designs and styles of these basic elements.

The following are regions that Zorya has currently within their repertoire.
